warning: car stereo idiot questions

My '87 5kcstq has the stock 10 (?) speakers installed w/an aftermarket Sony
CD receiver deck (I used to work for them--great employee discount.)
Anyway...

As I track down my broken lead (rear dr. side speakers don't work, I figgur
it's a broken lead) I was wondering about upgrading the speakers. I'm not
looking to win any competitions, just improve the quality of sound.

What are the OEM speakers' sizes?  If installing new speakers, is it as easy
as undoing wires on old speakers and attaching new ones?  Any brands to
recommends/avoid? Never done it before, so any btdt's or even how-to
sites/books/etc. would be great.
