Rattling alternator: 4kQ

I've got an annoying little problem that I worry about only because of the
concern that it could become a BIG problem -- as fellow vintage Audi owners
I'm sure you know the feeling.

I get a low rattle from my alternator at idle. It charges fine. But I did
install a rather funky '84 pulley on it to go along with the '84 crank
pulley I cannibalized from a parts car when the rubber in the corresponding
part on my '87 started disintegrating.

The alt pulley is dinged up, but it seems reasonably kind to the drive belt.

I've read where a rattling alternator can be benign or a sign of imminent
disaster. I humbly admit I've driven more than 1,000 miles with the
annoyance.

If the pulley is at fault, I'd love to replace it -- but try to find someone
who sells alternator pulleys! Even the local rebuilders come up empty.
