Cammed 4kq and cold weather

As long as I'm posting...
Last spring I installed Mike Tipton's old NF head and a 272 cam I got from
Ken Keith on my unsuspecting '87 4kcsq. It also got a Stebro free-flow
exhaust. this fall after I gave up on the Gomer job my local pipe bender
attempted.
The car runs like a charm -- except off a cold start. It wants to stall for
about 30 seconds (keeps running with my foot on the throttle pedal) and then
idles low for about 5 minutes. It will idle smoothly at 250 rpm after that
first 30 seconds. Two minutes later, the idle is up around 500.
After five minutes idle is at spec, smooth as can be, and the engine
responds superbly.
I ran across an independent Audi shop owner at a recent event, and he told
me I'd probably have to live with the cold-start issues (we're talking
Wisconsin here).
I can live with it, I guess, but does anybody have some alternative
suggestions?
