High performance valve springs(Autotech, etc.) are to avoid coil bind and
accomodate for higher lift from the Cam. They are not necessary, but a
good idea, especially since probably the old springs may be fatigued.
Check the Bently/Archives for procedure: easier to do with the head off,
but can be done with head on.

Re. Peymon's comments, I don't know for sure. My research and experience
says a properly designed High performance cam, when coupled with the 4KQ
Exhaust manifold, and complete NG setup, including ECU, knock sensor,
properly setup, etc. should be good for around a 20 HP gain over the stock
setup, and I believe that is conservative, especially if the exhaust is
upgraded. If you just plop in a cam and nothing more, the results may not
be that great, but still notable. These things tend to work together in
synergy.

If you just put in the NG engine and don't upgrade the engine management,
or just use the block with the original head, I would also expect the
results to be less.

My recollection of the 1.8l Jetta GL motor I transplanted into '81
Scirrocco when Neuspeed 268 Cam and Gillette 2" exhaust and header, felt
like I'd put a turbo in the car, but was that an additional 10 HP, 20? I
don't recall, except that it was significant, and that was only in a 4
banger.

What I am doing with project GTQ is to take the same type of setup as with
the '88GL 1.8 10:1 compression moter that I planted in the Scirocco, and do
similar but more extensive and thorough upgrades, including port and polish
on 87.5 GT NG 2.3l motor, manifold matching, etc. Currently the car is
running with aged stock motor, 264 Cam, Stebro exhaust and about 6 degrees
of timing advance. It is definately faster and pulls stronger - no problem
to the redline and beyond. How much HP is that? I don't know, but I'm
sure I have at least 10-15 HP over stock and this is an old low compression
motor.

Again to answer the question, I think adding a cam of proper lift and
duration - dont know about Blau's, but it sounds good - will be a
worthwhile bolt-on upgrade, expecially as a while I'm at it type of task.

YMMV.
