Had the same problem in my '87 80 last year when a crazed junkie broke into
my car, stole $6-worth and did $400-worth of damage, including head-butting
the mirror off the 'screen.
Don't bother trying to get the button out, no chance of success. Go to your
Audi dealership and ask for a mirror glue kit. It's a minuscule tube of
superglue and some gauze, cost me some $4 IIRC. Clean and degrease the spot
where the mirror once used to sit, mark it with a waterproof marker on the
outside of the 'screen first. Cut the gauze to size, the same size as the
mirror button. Clean and degrease the mirror stem.
Take the mirror head off the stem (small hex bolt) and put the glue on the
stem (has a very limited time before it cures) followed by the gauze. Now
press the mirror stem to the screen in the proper place, keeping it in
place for several minutes. Don't attempt to reinstall the mirror head
within 24 hours of glueing the stem on.
Good luck! Mine's held fine ever since...
