I was told that the 20valve head gasket is reusable. I was instructed that
you must use the same head and there cannot be any preexisting problems
with the head or gasket prior to disassembly. Is this true?

Given the hassle of pulling a head I wouldn't take the chance ... use a new
gasket, fewer caveats ...
