I've had reasonable success with Champion and Interstate batteries from
various sources,
the most recent was Wal-Mart (Champion) and that was awhile ago. Many
discount dept.
stores carry batteries for the VW/Audi (bottom clamp) fitments. Generally
less than $45.

The only reason not to go this route (actually a good route, as they have
so much turnover
that the batteries are fresh, the most important factor according to
Consumer's Union of
Consumer's Reports) is if you are racing, in which some of the EITHER
lighter (go fast) or
totally DRY (Gel, for safety) batteries may be better suited for your
purposes.

DEFINITELY no need to go to the dealer for this....
