I've designed and built a bunch of subs for me and friends, and had the
best experience in my old Audi 5kT. I had a 12" Blaupunkt sub. It pushed a
lot of air, so I designed a huge (~4 cu ft) sealed box for it. At first, I
was gonna put in a port, but I just tested it and loved the sound cuz it
was so smooth...and actually it was off of a Pioneer Premier head unit w/
MOSFET45 outputs to the sub. It sounded really clear until you could see
the lights on the display pulse (bad ground?) when the it started to clip.
BTW, I put in Boston Acoustics 4.5 component kit in the front, w/ the
tweeters mounted high. The rear speakers were removed, so the sound could
go thru the rear deck grilles. The sound was great all around in the car
even in the back.
JL audio speakers are great, so that's a good place to start, and sealed
boxes are very smooth and accurate. To get that heavy boooom, you need a
sub w/ high SPL or efficiency and long cone excursion (Xmax). A ported box
will help boost the dB's on top of that. To get the most accurate sound,
you need a more refined driver. The freq. response will be smoother and
usually lower SPL. Sealed enclosures smooth the response, especially around
the resonance frequency, where it normally sound harsh. But another thing
to keep in mind, is the larger subs are better at reproducing the lower
frequencies. There's a relation between the ideal driver's cone diam. and
freq. wavelength. That's why very high-end speakers have so many drivers.
Some have 3-4 subwoofers, not to mention 3-4 reg. woofers, in each speaker.

With all of the listers out there, I'm sure some of you have
installed a serious stereo in your cars, no?
I'd like to know what you all have done in terms subwoofers.
I'm looking at getting a dual voice coil 10" sub in a sealed
enclosure, each coil being fed 160W and have only to select the
sub and the installer.
One shop is recommending a JL 10W3, sounds like a decent selection
to me, w/ custom enclosure will run me about $375.
Any thoughts on this? I'm going w/ a 10" due to space limitations
and the fact that I don't want the sub to take up too much trunk space.
Will probably mount the sub between the gas tank and the rear deck,
up against the rear seat bulkhead. I just haven't figured out how to
mount it just yet.
