4kq front struts

Fellow Audi-philes, I’m in need of your assistance again..

Subject is an ’86 4kcsq. The front needs new shocks (sorry, strut inserts)
badly. Looking thru the archives, I see that you can replace the shocks on a
5k from the top, but can you do that for a 4k? I didn’t see any definitive
yes to that, so I’m assuming not. If that’s true, what then is the proper
sequence of steps to replace them? Is complete removal necessary? If yes, I’
ll need a spring compressor, or is there another way? I’m all ears, as
always.
