Just my experience, in the race car we ran it one weekend with water only,
half way through the second race the water pump began leaking badly from
behind the pulley, pulling it off revealed a thrashed bearing and tons of
shaft play (this on a very new pump btw). After installing another pump and
adding 2 bottles of water whetter, never had the problem again.

Same thing happened in my beater 4kq recently, had a coolant leak at the
heater control valve, so I just kept adding water and no coolant. Sure
enough, water pump starts leaking at the shaft, pure water coming out. YMMV,
but I'd bet that your WP is taking a beating (not that you mind by the sounds
of it =)
