proper a/c cold side reading

Too much refrigerant! The correct amount of R-12 is about 1100 g,
which is about  39 oz. When retrofitting to 134, you're only supposed
to use about 80-85% as much refrigerant, which would be 936g or about
33 oz. Adding more refrigerant will not help the cooling
capabilities, and will cause increased system pressure, and faster
wear. 3 12 ounce cans of R134a should be just about perfect.
