dying Audi

Is it running lean, rich? How did the shop diagnose the problem if they have no
idea how to fix it? Did they read the ecu? On my 5k you just use the throttle
switches and brake pedal to view the codes which show up through the tach
display. Don't know about the 90, but I think ECU codes are a good place to start.
The most common problems however are vac. leaks and blockage of the fuel
system. Check all the hoses and rubber fittings that are in the intake path. You
may have to remove a few hoses to get a good look at the bottoms of the hoses,
which often hide cracks if you just look at the top. This probably has affected all
Audi's w/ CIS. The cars run terrible (b/c of lean mixture). Check your fuel filter,
and if it hasn't been replaced recently, now's the time. There are lots of tests you
can do on CIS setups. One would be to check the fuel pump delivery rate. Just
disconnect the fuel hose after the filter and let the pump fill a 1 liter beaker for 30-
60 sec's depending on Audi's spec. This will show you if the fuel pump is weak. You
may also want to check the fuel injector spray patterns. They should be even
cones spraying out, but they're never abs. perfect. You can jumper the fuel pump
as before, lift the air-metering plate, and watch the inj's spray into a large glass
jar. Another important test is to check the fuel system pressures. You need a
special CIS fuel pressure test kit...the cheapest I've seen was at JCW for $60. This
will diagnose any problems w/ the system or control pressure which covers a lot of
bases. Careful tightening those banjo bolts on the fuel distributor, they don't need
too much torque. After fixing whatever may be broke, you may have to have the
mixture readjusted b/c of the changes to fuel system. You're better off doing it at
a shop w/ a CO (exhaust) analyzer, so next time you won't worry about passing
emissions... This stuff is pretty easy to fix, but you should feel at least comfortable
removing vac. and fuel lines. Good luck and let the list know what happens.
