Spongy brakes *sometimes*

It is completely random, and has nothing to do with temperature. I
have three intersections within the first minute of drive to work, and
I can not detect any pattern.

Have you verified the condition of the brake line hoses?  If the hoses are
faulty (worn from use or age), then the hoses will swell during pressure
application, which may cause the sponge feeling.
