BTDT, it's normal for these seals to get stuck. Try putting a few long
sheet rock or similar screws through the seal and wiggle it out back and
forth with a pair of pliers. Don't bother with the tool that has the
threads that supposedly catch on the inner seal, I've borrowed the ($90+)
tool from a friend and never got it to work. The "hook" style pullers
are a tight fit and usually too long to be of any use with the engine in
the car.
Be careful, make sure you're working the seal. If all else fails and you
decide to go to more "drastic" tools, make them brass chisels/punches.
Also, as you might already know, make sure the new seal does not go in
the exact same spot, move it in a little deeper or leave it out a bit so
that it's not sitting on the same small spot the old seal has worn away,
less change of leakage this way.
