ur-migos (long lister meeting report)

Work has been busy enough, I'm behind on two q-event reports (mid OH and
Blackhawk), but I thought I'd put forth the Blackhawk "behind the scenes"
report.
Per earlier list banners, Justin Riley (2 x 85 urq's in FL) was looking for
entertainment in Chicago. Bob Dupree (84 urq tornado) and I were quick to
ablige a fellow commiserator and fanatic. Friday nite we hooked up for
dinner and beers (in random respective non order), a quick blast down to the
skunk works shop for a tour (a post patdown of Justin revealed all inventory
safe:). Sent him back to his hotel, promising a dual urq pickup on SAT
morning.
Bob and I stopped off and picked up Justin on the way to Blackhawk Farms mid
morning SAT. Justin eased well into the dualing urq format and impromptu
races (+ assorted verbal/driving barbs) Bob and I rehearse on every meet (6
tollbooth races are the preface to any Blackhawk q event). Justin got to
compare 2 k24 turbo'd urq's back to back (for which he already paid the
"dinner" fee the night before). His impressions I'm sure will follow here.
Got to Rockton IL at noon, just in time for Bob and I to hop in cars for
instruction duties. The weather was the best in my 20 years there: Upper
70's and not a cloud. Some serious horsepower abounded, so apparently did
the testosterone. Luckily more bruises to ego than any sheetmetal.... But,
also my first off with a student as "far", (200 A4tq >25psi). A car in front
of us blew a turn, and our closing speed was of the warp variety, so my
student was strongly "suggested" the off by his instructor, and several
repeats of "straight-straight-straight" as the student thought about turning
instead of straight. A good 300ft into the dry swamp we were. Just put in
reverse, and drove back out, no damage. Anyone that's been to blackhawk
knows that turn 7 is the alligator swamp on any normal year. Lucky boy.
Back to urq... Bob "chim-chim AFLAK" Dupree (so ascribed for his urq "duck"
work) put a nifty oil cooler scoop to complement the IC shroud of earlier
this week. Despite that mod, both he and I took a pass on taking cars out
SAT. Also an administrative note was sent to the eventmaster from HQ
putting the kibash on the "instructor rides" (undoubtedly a VCHC aftermath)
until further notice, so Justin couldn't get any rides. My '83 had a
severely obstructed radiator, and I was not going to risk blowing coolant out
the hood vents. Bob and Justin twisted my arm fully, and Sat night Dupree
boldly pronouced his now famous "we'll just knock that out" intended swap of
the covetted Dialynx rad.
We hit Chicago later Sat evening, grabbed some food, and got a late night
start on the Dialynx swap. The operation (of course) ran into some serious
"complications", the most difficult was the lower bushing bolt removal (made
of kryptonite or sumthin). AFLAK was busy making a new lower rad shroud, and
Justin was put in charge of track tire swap (R8's with impossible to kill GY
Eagle GT+4's). Finishing up at 1am Sunday, with a cursory leak test.
Sunday Justin passed on going to the track in deference to touring the city,
AFLAK and I headed out to Blackhawk again for the 10am run sessions. Other
than the Anderson beast, our 2 were *all* of the urq contingent. The urq's
ran hot, but fast, the old gals doing quite well against the latest and
greatest MTM hardware.
The best urq memory was my queiry of a fellow instructor about his new C32
(MB v6 supercharged), "the fastest street car I've ever driven". His cursory
glance at my "race" GT+4's wasn't explaining his utter failure to ditch my
'83 during a run group that morning. ;). Bob and I had a blast entertaining
the troops on the benches at turns 3a>4b. We also came home with little in
terms of G60's, we appeared to have used them up. Imagine that....
All in all a great time with a fellow urq lister who couldn't have picked a
better time to come to Chicago. A big thanks to Justin for the help Saturday
nite, and AFLAK for the duct and usual sharing of great fun whilst piloting
urqs on and off track.
