Having both an 87 and 80 4000 I had some bizarre " like turning off the
ignition key" symptoms.
One was under the dash area by the steering column in the vicinity of the
ignition switch.
In this area I found an inline fuse capsule which was white and had a fuse
inside it. the capsule halves were loose and I was surprised that the
little fuse capsule could shut down the car. I had it happen while driving
and the other car had a "sweet spot" along the steering column where I
suspect a similar thing was happening.. Since long legs can brush some of
the wires under the dash above the gas pedal something may have been
disturbed.
The other was a loose battery cable both pos and neg each different times.
Also check the ignition switch. Hope this helps.

Sudden loss of power happens quite often in my experiences: teach her how to
control the car and maximize her safety in moving the car safely out of the
way before she stalls out in the fast lane.

My wife and daughter were driving home last night when
the engine died in my 1986 4k-CSQ. My daughter said
it was like turning off the ignition key.

I am thinking it may the Hall sender in the
distributor. I have not had a chance to look into
yet, but I would welcome any speculation. The car has
almost 250K miles on it and we still love it. Thanks
in advance.
