Clicking in engine

Clicking or tapping? If tapping is a better description, it could be 2 thing: lifter tap or the brake booster pump. Either is usually easy to fix. If the oil isn't changed on time (3,000 miles, always use either a Mann, Bosch, or Audi OEM filter and as think of an oil as you can in your area, 20w50 is VERY common) the hydraulic lifters will tick like crazy. Now on to the brake booster pump. Audi, as usual, over-engineered the braking system for the 4000. They added a vacuum booster pump that is run by a pushrod that makes direct contact with the cam. Over time the rod gets gummed up or worn out and begins to tap. Just open up the pump, remove the rod and put it back together without the rod. You engine makes plenty of vacuum under 99.9% of driving. The only exception is under serious track use where you spend a lot of time on both the gas AND brake at the same time.

Subject: Clicking in engine
I was hoping someone on the list could help me diagnose this problem:
My '87 4kcsq has a clicking noise in the engine on startup and the frequency of the clicks increases as I accelerate. From this brief description, does anyone have an idea as to the problem?
