Actually it's '97 or later... because that was the first year the A4 was
offered in the states with the 1.8T.

Don't forget that the 1.8T also has a crossflow head with the intake
hanging over the left side. Didn't do any measurements, but I would
expect that it won't clear the radiator. You're probably going to have
to switch to a 4-cyl 4000S radiator setup (ahead of the engine). The
electronics is what makes the 1.8T tick, and you really want to save
the factory motronic system if you can. But that's going to be a
challange.
A 1.8T swap sounds good on paper ("just drop it in there"), but it's
all the details and ifs and buts that would make a I5 turbo swap
seem like child's play.
