Check the drains underneath the splash cover behind the
firewall...that whole area under there gets full of leaves etc, and
the drains clog from said leaves, sticks, acorns...you name it.
Water just accumulated and then sloshed over and down through
something and onto you.
If it was R12, you'd have needed a trip to the emergency room for frostbite.
