Volkswagen has today unveiled the most powerful production Golf ever, the
R32. Making its world debut at the Madrid international motorshow, the new
model produces an impressive 240 bhp from its 3.2-litre V6 engine.

The narrow-angle six cylinder unit develops its peak power at 6250 rpm, with
maximum torque of 236 lbs ft produced at just 2800 rpm. With such generous
torque available at low engine speeds, the R32's power plant is designed as
much for its flexibility as it is for its high-revving potency.

The newcomer's appearance leaves onlookers in no doubt about its dynamic
potential. At the front, larger air inlets indicate the sizeable power
produced by the V6 unit, while redesigned sills and a new rear bumper -
incorporating twin chrome exhaust pipes- further help convey the R32's
sporting prowess. To finish, distinctive 'R32' chrome badges adorn the
grille and tailgate.

Technical highlights of the 3.2-litre V6 - which will also be used in the
Phaeton, Volkswagen's forthcoming luxury saloon - include a variable
geometry intake manifold, continuously variable inlet valve timing and a
knock sensing system. The deep growl of the engine is accompanied by
impressively strong performance - 0 to 62 mph takes only 6.4 seconds, while
the top speed, where permitted, is 152 mph.

Power is transmitted to 4MOTION intelligent four-wheel drive via a close
ratio six-speed gearbox. Compared with the standard model, the suspension
has been lowered by 30 millimetres, while striking 18-inch multi-spoke alloy
wheels with 225/40 ZR 18 tyres add further distinction. All-round ventilated
disc brakes, complete with eye catching blue brake callipers, provide the
stopping power expected of a car with the R32's level of performance.

Inside, the sports theme is continued with brushed aluminium racing pedals,
gearstick and trim plus unique chrome-ringed instruments with 'R32' livery.
The comprehensive range of standard equipment includes climate control, ESP
(electronic stabilisation programme) and Xenon headlights, as well as ABS,
four airbags and rain sensor wipers.

The Golf R32, which is only available as a three door hatchback, will go on
sale in the UK in limited numbers this autumn. Prices and exact
specifications for right-hand drive models will be available nearer to
launch
