Yeah, the 1.8t's are going into other cars, but, there are more blown-up
than any other audi mill i know of!
Secondly, perhaps you never had a 1.8t stipped down yet. There is simply no
comparison between an early 1.8t and anything VW/Audi ever put together. Not
to say the 1.8t is weak, it will likely last 200k+ miles before needing
rebuilds, but to compare it to the strength of a rabbit motor is absurd! I
feel comfortable winding my super-vee 1.6 rabbit motor to 9000 rpms, with a
stock forged crack and LIGHTENED stock rods! Try that with a 1.8t, I'd love
to see the fireworks! Stripping keyways in G60 corrados? The answer is
simple... It's not the cranks fault, it is a combination of driver error and
cast crank sprocket. Drivers who speed shift or downshift abruptly cause the
sprocket 'tit' to gain clearance, round off the edges if you will. After
many miles of hard driving (agrivated by over boosting) the sprocket keyway
finally strips taking out an otherwise good crank snout. The fix is simple,
Mig weld the rounded off portion of the crank keyway and file back to size.
Put a new oil seal in and a sprocket and your on your way with only a $150
bill.
16 valves? strong motors too. Eat's timing belts? naaa... replace them at
60k miles and you'll never have a problem. VR6's? I have yet to see any
timing chain issues (post 1995's) and only a few leaking head gaskets.
