[A4] Cam advance or retard? (was timing belt alignment question)

This morning I put the old tensioner, which is a smaller diameter than the
new one, and the old belt, which is one tooth shorter, back on the car. It
fits exactly the same way as the new stuff, i.e. I'm a half tooth off at the
crank. So it's not the new stuff. The new belt needs to be 1 tooth longer,
in order to work with the slightly larger diameter tensioner pulley.
So do I want some cam advance, or some cam retard on my 1.8 turbo? :-)
Thanks,
st

I don't know this as a fact, but possibly one extra tooth shared by two
pulleys equals the half a tooth your present belt is off????
