Hi Ben. I had a similar problem on my 87 5kq. Turned out to be the
alt. In my case it triggered the autocheck icon and when I checked the
volts via the CC read-out it was over 17 volts. I found that by
turning on consumers I could bring the volts down to ~14-15. I had
replaced the regulator recently and generally cleaned up the alt. as I
had been having some charging problems. When the autocheck was
triggered I was out in the boonies about 100 miles from home. Stopped
by a friend of mine, picked up a charged battery and put it in the
trunk. Another ten miles down the road the alt. went south. Needed a
new stator and armature, regulator was good. So the original lasted
~14 years...not too shabby when you consider where it lives, ie. right
down where it's wet and nasty. Maybe consider getting a bench test for
the alt.

Best regards,
Geo
