Speaking of the sending unit, here are some pics so you can see what you are dealing with:

"I think" you have to remove the arm from the sender at some point, in order to get it out without messing
anything up.
You may be able to do it without removing the arm, but if I recall correctly, I had difficulty.
I didn't need the tool either. I just drove off the retaining ring with a screwdriver. There is a danger of
creating sparks, so if you have a wooden dowel or other non-sparking device, it would be best.
