Laurent,
Not sure how it works today with the latest EEC rules, etc., but last I
lived there (1989) the sales tax was somewhere near 180%
(one-hundred-eighty, yes, it's not a typo). First they added the import tax
or duty of I think 18% or so, then the V.A.T. or sales tax of 25%, and then
the registration fee of 138% or so. Basically, the special Danish offer was:
Buy 1 car, pay for 3!
It was so bad, that the manufacturers were forced to sell their products to
Danish dealers for less than what a dealer in any other country could buy
them for. So, when you bought a car in Denmark, and put it on "border
plates", you pay only for the car, and no taxes, but you must export it
within 6 months. Many times it would pay for an American to go to Denmark,
buy a U.S. spec car, drive it around Europe on vacation, bring it back to
the US, and sell it, thereby paying for the entire trip!
That was then. As I said, I'm not sure how it works today.
