I feel bad for your starter if it's pulling 600 amps.

Possibly, depending on the fuse.  Some will blow
instantly, some will have a delay.

No, I ran a 110 amp fuse for more than a year with no
problems, until I accidently started the car in gear.
There were countless times when I would crank the
engine for over 10 seconds doing compression tests,
timing adjustments, fogetting to hook up the coil, you
know.

I've seen a few cars with them stock, but in most
cases the wires aren't more than a few feet long, so
there is no need.  It's when that wire catches
everthing else around it on fire that you have a
problem.
