More info on Grinding in 4th gear on 016 gearbox

Driving all over the place, I have isolated the noise to ball joint under t=
he gear shifter (this would be so much easier if I could listen and let som=
eone else drive -- maybe my little boy is ready to learn ;-)

Anyway, the noise is getting louder and it all gears.  It sounds like a bro=
ken spring or something is rattling around.
If I lift up on the gearshift the noise goes away

time to pull it apart and see what is up!

OK, now I have the oil plug finally open on my 016 gear box (Manually trann=
y on my 87 5KCSQ) I was indeed low on gear oil.  Small oil leak around the =
input shaft seal...

Even after filling there is still a grinding noise coming from the gearshif=
ter when the car is in 4th gear.  If I push the shifter forward slightly ri=
ght before neutral, the sound goes away...

Anyway, the noise wasn't there before I replaced the clutch. It just starte=
d when the gear oil level was low.
What did I break this time and how hard is it to replace?

Who is questioning his sanity for still holding on to his 87 5KCSQ



More than likely your fourth gear syncro is worn. Replacement of the syncro=
 and gear will fix your problem.
