Thanks again for your help Javad.

All the above is the stock '85 or '86 4kq stuff.
> -which spark plugs are you running?
I am using Bosch W7DTC, tri-electrode, 4 days old.
WR7DS is listed as an alternate plug for the NG by Bentley. Could the
silver electrode and resistance be a factor? It certainly affected their
price, by 2x.
> -Did you have the head shaved when rebuilt, had it been shaved in the
past?
I did not, though the previous owner (who did the P&P job) very likely did.
Is a thicker headgasket avaliable for the 5 cylinders?
> -Are you using 91 or 92 oct. fuel?
Whatever is the highest avaliable, usually 92, from Chevron or Texaco.
Occasionally I'll be camping in the middle of nowhere and the redneck
mountain town gas-em-up will have 91, of unknown origin, but that is rare.

I don't have a NG/NF piston to compare to. They look like

> Were'nt those Golfs 10.5:1 comp?
The Golf Bentley is telling me 10.0:1 for the HT engine.
>are you monitoring O2 or EGT?
Alas, I don't have an EGT sensor. I could rig something with the o2 sensor
and a multimeter then go drive around...
