Ticking 80 Quattro

I have the same symptoms with my 87 5ktq sedan.  Had all the lifters
replaced just 6k miles ago.  The ticking goes away after the engine is all
warmed up.  Whatever the reason might be, is it bad for the car ?

My brother's '88 80 Quattro is making a ticking noise (metal onto metal
clank) when it is cold.  The ticking speed varies with RPMs.  Originally
thought it was lifters and replaced all of them, still same noise.  Doesn't
do it once the engine has been warmed up though, only after it has been
sitting for an hour or more.
Any ideas?
