Have you ditched the brake booster vacuum pump? it has a push rod that runs off the cam and tends to get loud. Many people who tick blame the lifters only to discover that it's the brake booster. Just open up the pump, pull out the rod and put the pump back together. See http://pw2.netcom.com/~duandcc/pictures/1987.5CGT/vacpump.jpg for a pic of the pump in question (pic is of a KX engine, but you'll get the idea).

Subject: Ticking 80 Quattro

My brother's '88 80 Quattro is making a ticking noise (metal onto metal
clank) when it is cold. The ticking speed varies with RPMs. Originally
thought it was lifters and replaced all of them, still same noise. Doesn't
do it once the engine has been warmed up though, only after it has been
sitting for an hour or more.
Any ideas?
