Hall Sensor?

OK, yesterday I discovered that my Hall Sensor had partly come out of the distributor. I popped it back in and all seems good now. I'm still not sure what the real issue was, loose sensor, loose spark plug that cause bucking that pulled out the Hall Sensor or what? But that's neither here nor there. I'm curious as to what a Hall Sensor is and what it does. Also, what are the symptoms of a bad one? Any troubleshooting tips? Help edumacate a not-so-mechanically-inclined Audifan...
