Zip ties? Oh, you mean the one that was already there wasn't stock? ;) PO must have been on the list and already done that. Guess I should tighten up the zip tie a little since it still popped out. Thanks for the tip.

Subject: Re: Hall Sensor?

Hall Sender sends the information about engine speed to the ECU. It is
called a Hall Sender because it works based on the Hall effect - a
spinning magnet will generate a current in a inductive loop. Faster the
distributor shaft spins, the higher the current generated, letting the ECU
know what the engine speed is. If the hall sender is not functioning the
engine won't run, because it will not be receiving any fuel. I had a bad
connection to the hall sender in my Passat and the engine would stutter
and die sometimes. The way to keep the female end of the plug from fallin
out of the distributor and hanging by the wires (if the plastic tabs are
broken as they were in my Passat) is to put a zip tie around the distr.
housing, loosely so it doesn't push the plug in too much.

I'm still not sure what the real issue was, loose sensor, loose spark plug that cause bucking that pulled out the Hall Sensor or what? But that's neither here nor there. I'm curious as to what a Hall Sensor is and what it does. Also, what are the symptoms of a bad one? Any troubleshooting tips? Help edumacate a not-so-mechanically-inclined Audifan...
