I searched the archives for a metal heater valve and found an
Autozone part
number.  I've tried almost every auto supply in the twin cities
(including
Autozone) and no one has a metal unit.

I got one from one of the big Internet sites that sells car parts - either
napaonline.com or carparts.com.  It's made by Stant, and it's cheap.
