When cold, does the coolant come up to at least the minimum mark? What color is the coolant? Pink? Orange? Green? That will help us determine if it has the right type of coolant in it. Also, have you tried bleeding the system? There is a bleeder nut on top of the radiator. Remove it when the car is cold, start and when the coolant starts to expand it will force the air out this hole. When coolant starts to come out the hole, put the nut back in. Also, a flush & fill wouldn't hurt. Might want to throw a new thermostat in her (cheap + easy to do).
