The system has never been "tested" in -40 per say, but it can still be tuned
to start and run at that climate (though I'm not sure any cars are firing
right up and running, without an extensive warm up, very well in that temp,
are they?) I lived in the midwest for until I was 18, I don't remember any
car my parents ever had liking to start in the sub zero temps. It used to
hit -40 in MN and NE, but I don't remember too many people actually trying to
drive =)
Anyway, even though the lowest range is -13 to 3 (which can be really
considered 3 degrees and below), at this point, fueling can be set so that a
compromise between rich and lean can be had up until the next adjustment
range, which is 3 to 19. Starting will not be an issue at all, since the
number of cold start pulses is very programmable, it may just run a little
lean with water temps at a full -40, then a little rich at 3, until it hits 2
degrees and another adjustment value is available.
Of course, remember that the ecu is not measuring outside air temp or even
wind chill, but the water and air temps in the engine at the time which
likely won't be -40.
