Mystery solved!

I had the chance to look at an NG powered Audi 90 today, and I spotted
the same sensor just above the distributor (in other words, in the other
rear corner of the cam cover). What I did now was to look at the part
number, and with the help of the family album, I found that this was
called a "thermo switch cylinder head for vehicles with radiator fan
run-on" and with the remark 85C, which probably is the temperature
setting. The part number is 034 919 369A if anyone wonders. Now to check
mine to see if this actually works.
