4k Brake light

I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I couldn't find it in the
archives...

My brake lights died.  Checked glovebox light, cigarette lighter light,
both OK (I recall something about them being related).  Both lights
for the license plate light up.  Checked the fuse - that's OK.  What next?

..sigh... ask me about my day.  Audi broke down today in downtown LA.
Needless to say, I didn't have any money, and had no idea where I was.
