If you are willing to use a scrap piece or spare piece of trim as a test, what about dipping it in that "liquid electrical tape" stuff? Creates a nice black rubbery coating that is totally water-proof. Or, what about powder-coating the parts?

There is a black plastic material dip material for coating the handles of
tools. I'd start looking for it at Ace Hardware and Lowes and maybe NAPA.
