If you want to stay with a normally aspirated motor you have two choice cheap
and expensive.
a 2.3 liter NG motor from a 1987-1988 audi 5000 will give you decent
performance with a good cam, and cleaned up intake and exhaust ports. I would
expect nothing more than 140 hp or so. It will drop into your 4000q (just be
careful with the timing as the NG uses a knock sensor). You can also put the
NG ignition into your 4000 with a small degree of difficulty.
The expensive option would be to use a N/A 20V from a 1990-1991 audi coupe
quattro or 90 quattro 20V which would be much more difficult to install.
