I am among many of the listers who have upgraded. I opted for swapping in
an NG high compression motor.

I'm not finished yet, as the project got pre-empted for the recent work on
the turbo avant, but am confident this will yeild solid performance and
reliability. All I need now is a couple of days to install the motor.
Most of the effort went into my going overboard with the engine rebuild,
which I admit was not really necessary.
An NF motor could be installed and bolt right in with your existing
manifolds and fuel system and can get you to around 135 HP - perhaps add a
cam.
If you have more time and are willing to do the retrofitting, you can put
in a turbo motor. In retrospect I might go this route if starting over,
but my recent experience with a turbo motor says that this is far more
effort, money and way more time consuming. There is much experience to
draw from on the list tho. Check out what Mark Swanson and others have
done.
If you are not looking for outrageaous power, the N/A swap is your simplest
bet - good power, relatively easy swap.

<The time has come to build a replacement motor for my 4kq.
It's got 240k on it so I'd like to build it's replacement so I am ready
when
the day comes to replace it, whether it is in two months or two years.
What I'd like to do is get a little more power out of it, stick with good
bottom end torque and decent power up to the 5500-6000k rpm range without
going turbo and still keeping it very streetable and dependable.
Porting, cam, boring, etc but I don't want to go with the light flywheel.
Anyone got the BTDT experiences that you are willing to share.
Email direct if you like and TIA>
