I think they just used the same way to cut the reverse gear teeth as they
used for the forward gears, not the usual (and noisy) straight-cut teeth on
'lesser' cars. This makes reverse so quiet on our cars.

It is however possible to change from first to reverse without coming to a
full stop. Not recommended, but possible. The quattros seem to have more
trouble getting reverse gear than the FWDs, BTW.
