My Bentley is at home and I'm not, but as I recall (for USA Golf2/Jetta2):
<89 1.8 8v had CIS-E, no knock sensor
<89 1.8 16v had CIS-E w/knock sensor (in a separate box), not really
"chippable"
>90 1.8 8v had Digifant, proprietary VW EFI, not tunable until chips were
made recently
>90 2.0 16v had "CIS-E Motronic", fuel & spark control in one box made by
Bosch while still using the CIS metering head, "chippable" advance &
mixture, known idle problems related to code revisions and imperfect engine
bay electrical connections
