IIRC, the stroke is made up for in the crank, which is why the 2.0l is known
as the 'bubble block.'   The sides bulge out because the crank is
significantly larger than pre-88 Audi and all VW 4-cylinders.  I don't know
the specs off the top of my head, but there are many VW sites that have
numbers for the bubble block.
