A close friend in the automotive foam business gave me a real nerdy
discussion on autofoam.  He indicated to me that headliner foam (ala audi) is
good for about 10 years.  Then it starts to breakdown (smoking or not) and by
year 15, you can just about guarantee yourself tribbles inside your car, and
that obstructed rear view mirror.

I did my wagon at 12years, a few customer cars in the 10-15 year range.  Most
interior shops are very familiar with the procedure on audis.  Oh, and
absolutely nothing you can really do about stopping it except R&R.  Er, well
Bob did one half of the R on the LT1Q....
