Is it blowing through those vents on the HIGH fan speed?
I believe the 1986-1988 Type 44's are designed to NOT blow AC through the center
vents on the HIGH fan speed. Does it open the center vents on the LOW fan speed?
If you have a Bentley for this car I believe it has a section explaining the
vacuum control of the vents and tells which vents open for which settings.
I have not yet modified my 1986 5000cstq to remove the "feature" of not using
the center vents for HIGH fan setting with AC.
As far as the heat operating, have you checked your heater valve. This is behind
the engine next to the fire wall. It has a vacuum line going into it. My guess
is that either the valve has failed or maybe the vacuum line is simply
disconnected. If you need a new valve, all-metal valves available at some local
auto parts stores seem to be the preferred replacement. These were discussed on
the list recently. Check the archives.

I need a little insight into this before I start tearing into it.
I have an '87 5KTQ - Basically the situation is this, the A/C is
blowing through the heater / defroster vents and not through the front
vents in the dash. Now for the bigger problem: It is blowing a
combination of cooled air and HEAT! So the A/C is cold for the first
few minutes but when the coolant heats up and flows through the heater
core I get luke warm air. I am not a big proponent of using the A/C -
but the past couple of days it has been 90 degrees plus here.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
