West Coast Trip - no Audi content

I am planning a trip from Western Canada to Southern California on the
end of the March/early April.

I am located in Alberta, and I am going across the Rockies in Canada,
then hit the I-5 and also the nice parts of the coastal highway ones I'm
in the US. My final destination is Palm Springs, but I would also like
to spend some time in LA and San Diego.

I was hoping to get some recommendations about what to see, what to
avoid, where to stay etc.

Also, if any listers wanted to meet for a beer of coffee that would be
great.
