Interesting dilemma, sudden No start, but will crank like crazy.

Start with awful fact that the book value of the car is lower than the
cost of a new battery...

Does it have spark?  Is the fuel pump running?

Have you disconnected all the electrical connections under the hood,
cleaned them, and reassembled them with dielectric grease?  18 years
takes it's toll on all that underprotected wiring...
