Noisy fuel pump when tank is empty?

Car in question: 1992 Audi Cabriolet 2.3E (NG) with 135000 kms.

Yesterday I almost ran dry of gas, and the fuel pump started making ugly
noises. When I filled the tank again the fuelpump was humming quietly in
the background, like normal. The thing is that I have never heard the
pump before, even though I have run the tank almost dry several times
earlier. Is this the Audi Gods that have heard rumours that I want to
sell my car?
