removing rear ball joints...how?

Okay...I'm halfway through the subframe replacement.

I thought I might be able to cheat a little...so I have a subframe hanging 
loose, hanging by the control arms, which are hanging by the ball joints 
underneath the rear struts.

How do I remove the ball joints from the hub?  (I figure I just use a ball 
joint fork...)
How do I get them back INTO the hub? (hammer and block of wood?)

My car is a 1989 90 quattro, late VIN with the rear suspension that 
has "seperate wheel bearing/shock absorber housing".

Bentley gives directions on how to do this with the OLD style suspension...but 
not MINE!?!

Help!
