Unfortunately, this process doesn't provide hydrogen gas.

Yup.  You sure do.  We have a lot of trees around these parts also, 
Fred.  Not as many as last week, though.  Logs are being hauled out of the 
forest within a few hundred yards of my home as I write this.  Clear 
cutting, dontcha know?  Look what is happening to the Brazilian rain 
forest.  Slash and burn farming.  :-(  On a world wide basis, forests are 
being cut faster than they can regrow.  Look what happened to the Sahara 
Forest.  :-)
